After a 19-10 loss on Sunday and being swept by the Tennessee Titans in the season series, the Indianapolis Colts are getting desperate.
The news broke on Monday afternoon that the Colts would be benching veteran quarterback Matt Ryan for the remainder of the season, with Sam Ehlinger stepping in as the full-time starter.
According to The Athletic's Zak Keefer, Ryan has a "Grade 2 shoulder sprain" which will keep him out of practice this week and make Nick Foles the backup on Sunday against Washington. But make no mistake, moving Ryan to the bench is a permanent decision that is not related to his injury status.
Seven games into the season, Ryan has 2,008 passing yards with nine touchdowns and nine interceptions. His quarterback rating is the second worst of his 15 year NFL career, and the Colts offense currently sits in the bottom four in points per game (16.1).
Six weeks ago, Ryan was drawing MVP buzz and comparisons to Peyton Manning. Today, he was benched for a 6th round draft pick that has never thrown an NFL pass. Oh, how the mighty have fallen.
One of two things are happening inside the Colts organization right now.
Either Frank Reich, Chris Ballard, and Jim Irsay are making a deliberate effort to tank and land a top draft pick to get a top quarterback prospect, or two losses to the Titans made them so desperate to believe Ehlinger can be the answer to their prayers.
Both are equally embarrassing, and both result in Ballard and Reich losing their job at season's end.
The Colts have now traded a first round pick and two third round picks to acquire Ryan and Carson Wentz, just to get 24 games (of bad football) out of them combined. That's poor process, poor management, and incredibly poor external scouting.
The Titans continued ownership of Indianapolis has officially reached new heights.
