Former Tennessee Titans wide receiver Corey Davis is still not over the way things ended while he was in Tennessee.
Davis, the fifth overall pick in the 2017 NFL Draft by Tennessee, spent four seasons with the team before leaving in free agency to sign a 3-year $37.5 million contract with the New York Jets.
While Davis' production for the Titans never lived up to the first round draft grade he received coming out of Western Michigan, it would appear Davis was still surprised by the way the team handled his contract negotiations following the 2020 season.
On the most recent edition of "Raw Room", a podcast hosted by former Tennessee Titans LB Daren Bates, Davis opened up about leaving the Titans, and the effect contract negotiations had on his mental health.
Bates opened the show by asking Davis if he wanted to stay with the Titans long-term, which prompted Davis to share his true feelings on the end of his time in Tennessee.
"Off comfortability, I probably would have stayed. I feel like I would have stayed if the money was right, offer was right," Davis said. "But they didn't even offer me nothing so…I feel some type of way about that."
Davis' final year in Tennessee (2020) was the best of his career, as he tallied 984 receiving yards in 14 games played. Still, the Titans did not offer him a contract, and one year later, the team traded AJ Brown to Philadelphia instead of paying him, leaving the WR room barren.
To make matters worse, the same podcast interview insinuated that the Titans used COVID as a reason to not pay players following the 2020 season.
Defensive tackle DaQuan Jones, who also said he struggled with the idea of leaving Tennessee, shared frustration over being told he could't get paid because of COVID-19.
"It was frustrating because it was a tough year. COVID came out and then everyone was giving you excuses why you weren't getting what you deserved because of COVID," Jones said. "I'm expecting to get paid, and I didn't…they were all 'COVID this, COVID that.'"
Who knows if the pandemic was also the reason for the Titans lack of contract offers to Davis. It shouldn't really matter. Either way, the Titans front office has failed their fanbase and their quarterback with the way they have handled the WR position over the last few years.
First Davis, then Brown, and both players reflect back on their time wishing they were still a Tennessee Titan. That's a problem.
Instead, the current roster has four healthy wide receivers including two former undrafted free agents, a 5th round rookie, and a 30-year old coming off an ACL surgery. That's not good enough or a competitive enough group in the NFL.
So yes, Corey Davis should absolutely still have some negative feelings about how the Titans handled his free agency. Titans fans should "feel some type of way" about it too.
