NASHVILLE — The Tennessee Titans continued to address their roster needs on Friday night. With the 38th pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, general manager Ran Carthon added defensive tackle T'Vondre Sweat to Tennessee's latest crop of rookies.
The theme of the Titans draft so far: BEEF.
Tennessee drafted offensive tackle JC Latham No. 7 overall in the first round to solidify the left side of a line that was in desperate need of a talent influx. Defensively, the Titans needed reinforcements upfront losing both Teair Tart and Denico Autry in the last calendar year. The defensive tackle was arrested in this month with a DWI.
Carthon and coach Brian Callahan noted that Sweat's 30 visit with the team was the first after the nose tackle's arrest.
For Tennessee's brass, it was important to do some additional vetting of Sweat after the visit. Carthon and Callahan traveled to Houston to meet with Sweat and his family and work through any potential causes for concern. The two men came away from their interactions satisfied that it would not present future issues to the detriment of the team.
"I think his accolades and his play on the field speaks for itself," Carthon said of the Texas defensive lineman. "He's a big man that's going to present problems in the middle. Hard to move
Sweat is a mountain of a man at 6-5, 366 lbs. He was the Outland Trophy winner and the Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year. Sweat will be paired with star Tennessee defensive tackle Jeffery Simmons and offseason acquisition Sebastian Joseph-Day.
He will give the Titans interior defensive line some serious teeth in stopping the run and occupying double-teams.
