NASHVILLE — The Tennessee Titans have zeroed in on a new quarterbacks coach to help with the development of Will Levis.
According to reports earlier this week, the Titans are hiring former Las Vegas Raiders interim offensive coordinator Bo Hardegree to be the QB coach and newest member of Brian Callahan’s 2024 coaching staff.
Along with being the most recent offensive coordinator for the Raiders, Hardegree is also a former QB for the Tennessee Vols and experienced NFL quarterbacks coach. Here’s everything you need to know about the new hire.
Who is Bo Hardegree?
After finishing his playing career with the Vols in 2007, Hardegree immediately entered the coaching world and took a job as a graduate assistant with Duke University. At the time, David Cutcliffe had just taken the head coaching job at Duke after a stint at Tennessee as the offensive coordinator. He coached Hardegree in Knoxville and hired his former player to his staff.
Hardegree would then intern at LSU from 2011-2013 before getting his first NFL coaching job with the Denver Broncos in 2024. That's also where Hardegree first met Brian Callahan.
Callahan was the an offensive assistant for the 2014 Broncos under head coach John Fox. Hardegree was an offensive quality control coach that same year. While Callahan stayed in Denver after Fox departed and Gary Kubiak took over, Hardegree followed Fox to the Chicago Bears.
After just one year in Chicago, Bears offensive coordinator Adam Gase got the head coaching job with the Miami Dolphins and Hardegree made yet another move. From 2016-2018, Hardegree was the quarterbacks coach for Ryan Tannehill, Jay Cutler, and Brock Osweiler in Miami. He would once again follow Gase in 2019, this time to the New York Jets as an offensive assistant.
Hardegree got his next shot at being a quarterbacks coach with the Las Vegas Raiders in 2022 under head coach Josh McDaniels. Raiders quarterback Derek Carr made the Pro Bowl in 2022 before leaving in free agency.
In 2023, Hardegree really showed what he was made of. In the first half of the Raiders' season, Hardegree was the quarterbacks coach for Jimmy Garoppolo, Brian Hoyer, and Aidan O'Connell in the McDaniels offense. But after eight games of failure, McDaniels was fired by the Raiders and Hardegree was promoted to interim offensive coordinator where he would get his first shot at calling plays.
After the promotion on October 31st, the Raiders went 5-4 with O'Connell starting at quarterback. The team's offensive output improved by over seven additional points per game. The Raiders did not commit a turnover in six of their nine games with Hardegree as their OC after turning the ball over in all eight games with McDaniels calling plays. Oh…and they hung 63 on the Chargers.
After the recent success he had with the Raiders in 2023, Hardegree is more than qualified to be a quarterbacks coach in 2024. I like the experience he has working with big-arm quarterbacks that like to take shots down the field. Jay Cutler, Derek Carr, etc.
Add in the familiarity Hardegree has with Titans head coach Brian Callahan and his hometown being Jackson, TN, and this feels like a good fit for the Titans. I'm not mad at this hire at all.
