NASHVILLE — Any time the Tennessee Titans come out with an unacceptable effort on a Sunday and lose to their opponent, the postgame message is usually the same. Coach better and play better.
But for Titans fans, consistently hearing that mantra after a loss gets old. You can only say that you need to coach better and play better so many times before it needs to be backed up by action. Dating back to last season, the Titans have now lost 9 of their last 10 contests, and it feels like we hear the same thing after every one.
I get that it's coach speak. Nobody wants to point fingers or throw anybody under the bus and when you lose as badly as the Titans did on Sunday in Cleveland, there's usually so many different problems that it's hard to say anything else. It's never one area or player.
But talk is cheap. Titans defensive tackle Jeffery Simmons gets that. After the game on Sunday, Simmons said what every Titans fan has been waiting to hear.
"That's getting old," Simmons said of the 'coach better play better' postgame messages. "It's time to actually do it. We've been hearing that message every week, now it time for us to actually do it. We talk about it so much, we gotta do this, we gotta do that, but it's a mindset. It's time to win."
"It's time to stop having the same things over and over again. We gotta play better," said Simmons. "I'm a winner. I like to win, so it's time to put it together and start winning."
Do not confuse this emotion for Simmons calling out head coach Mike Vrabel. That's not what's going on here. Simmons is just feeling all of the same emotions most Titans fans are. Losing games because of the same glaring issues can be frustrating. Up to this point, the switch hasn't flipped for the Titans as a unit.
I love this energy and I hope every player in that locker room is matching Jeffery Simmons right now. No more standing around thinking everything is going to fix itself. I like to see a player that has fire and passion for improving as a team. That's a man who hates losing and is willing to do whatever it takes
Titans fans should love to see it. It's about time somebody said something.
