How the Titans could be impacted by the NFL's new schedule rule
New NFL schedule rules could mean the Tennessee Titans get left out of primetime rotation.
The complete 2023 NFL schedule is set to be released on Thursday, May 11th at 7:00p.m. CST and include weekly opponents, international games, primetime matchups, and more.
The schedule announcement is highly anticipated by NFL fans every year, but this year's release could prove to be more significant than most.
With a series of new schedule rules officially beginning this season, team's like the Tennessee Titans could be impacted in a major way.
According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, the following rules will apply to the 2023 NFL schedule:
– NFL will have a Black Friday game for the first time ever.
– Games do not necessarily "belong" to networks anymore. All games are free agents to be televised on any network.
– Teams can be on Thursday Night Football twice.
– Not all teams are guaranteed to have a primetime spot.
So how will these rule changes impact the Titans in 2023? It's entirely possible that Tennessee will be one of the team's left off the NFL's primetime schedule.
The Titans played five games in primetime last season. Monday Night Football in Buffalo, Sunday Night Football in Kansas City, Thursday Night Football twice – once in Green Bay and once at home against the Dallas Cowboys, and a Saturday Night game in Week 18 against Jacksonville.
That's not unusual for a team that had the best record in the AFC in 2021. But after trading away A.J. Brown, losing seven straight games to end the 2022 season, and missing the playoffs, the Titans are not the marquee opponent they were this time last year.
Jacksonville is the up-and-coming contender from the AFC South and both Indianapolis and Houston will likely be starting top rookie quarterbacks in Week 1. That leaves the Titans as arguably the least marketable team in the division right now, so I won't be shocked if they don't receive a primetime game.
Prior to 2022, the last time the Titans missed the playoffs was 2018 when they finished 9-7. The ensuing year, the 2019 Titans had just one primetime game in a Thursday Night Football matchup with Jacksonville in Week 3. That, of course, was a requirement at the time.
It will be fun to see how the schedule looks when it is revealed on Thursday. The Titans have a home game scheduled in London that still needs an opponent. I'll also be on the lookout for which week the Houston Texans are in town as the Titans are expected to break out the Houston Oilers throwback uniforms that week.
Hopefully there is a primetime game mixed in there somewhere and we can watch Derrick Henry, Treylon Burks, Jeffery Simmons, and Kevin Byard under the bright lights. But I'll be preparing for the worst.
