Titans OC Tim Kelly gives his thoughts on the wide receiver room
The group Tennessee plans to field in 2023 looks eerily similar to last season.
NASHVILLE — The Tennessee Titans current wide receiver room has discussed ad nauseam this offseason. Offensive coordinator Tim Kelly gave his thoughts on the group ahead of Tuesday's OTAs.
Kelly would like to focus on the positives.
"I've seen these guys play," said Tennessee's OC when asked why he felt the team had enough to work with at wide out. "I've seen these guys make plays in big games."
Kelly went on to cite individual performances as evidence to support his belief.
Nick Westbrook-Ikhine coming up big against the Washington Commanders (2 catches, 72 yards) was mentioned. Kyle Philips' tape against the New York Giants (6 catches, 66 yards), Kelly said, was worth watching as well. The issue is not that every receiver on the Titans current roster has gone their entire careers to date without making a play, however.
Tennessee's problem is no one on this roster has done so at the professional level with any degree of consistency.
Kelly and the coaching staff clearly believe they've got more firepower to work with than we're giving them credit for. How else could one explain the Titans approach at adding talent to the position this offseason? The new play-caller might find better ways to put this group in positions to succeed than his fired predecessor.
Tennessee might also benefit from any improved availability from players like Philips, Racey McMath and Treylon Burks.
A veteran presence in journeyman Chris Moore was the team's solution in free agency. The veteran chose the Titans after coming off of his first real opportunity to be a full-time receiver with the Houston Texans last year. At 29-years old, Moore is the only person with true career experience in that room.

"Chris Moore is doing a great job," said Kelly. "Obviously, I have some experience with him with our time back in Houston. He's a pro. He comes in every day, he prepares, he works, he runs and he's been a good edition to the room."
Tennessee's offensive emphasis has been a focus on playing faster through increased efficiency. Any signs of life from this unproven wide receiver room would go a long way towards that effort.
