NASHVILLE — Tennessee Titans rookie offensive lineman Peter Skoronski has missed the team's last two games after getting appendix surgery.
Skoronski originally missed a practice with an "illness" prior to Tennessee's Week 2 matchup with the Los Angeles Chargers. Skoronski's injury was then listed as an "abdomen" last week and head coach Mike Vrabel confirmed that Skoronski had an appendectomy.
For the first time since going down, Skoronski was in the Titans' locker room on Wednesday and provided an update to Titans media about his injury and his status moving forward.
Skoronski informed Titans media on Wednesday that his appendix ruptured while he was at Ascension Saint Thomas Hospital leading to an emergency surgery. The rookie offensive lineman originally thought he had food poisoning, but it was unfortunately a more severe situation.
In more positive news, Skoronski is now doing well and has been able to return to the weight room recently. He is also starting to get his appetite back. The biggest challenge in recovering from an appendectomy (apart from the pain) is the weight loss and rebuilding core strength. That process has now begun.
But as Skoronski works back up to full strength, it's important to not push things too fast. Getting back in the weight room for some core work is a far cry from being back on the field in an NFL game. Skoronski is taking his progress day-by-day.
Titans head coach Mike Vrabel seemed optimistic about Skoronski's status saying that the 2023 first round pick's "overall demeanor" had improved.
"He's doing a lot more, so that's been good," Vrabel said of Skoronski. "Just his overall demeanor and feeling better and what he's been able to do as far the weight room, conditioning, eating, and getting stronger and healthier."
While it's not the news Titans fans want to hear, I don't expect to see Skoronski on the field this Sunday against the Cincinnati Bengals. Recovering from appendix surgery is a process and the last thing the Titans or Skoronski needs is him ripping a stitch and having a setback. Let's also not forgot the weight loss, which may have been significant.
I'm optimistic that Skoronski could return against the Indianapolis Colts in Week 5, but for now, the Titans will have to make do with what they have available on the offensive line.
