NASHVILLE — According to a report from NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, Tennessee Titans starting quarterback Ryan Tannehill is “unlikely to play” against the Atlanta Falcons next weekend.

Tannehill suffered a high ankle sprain against the Baltimore Ravens in London, but the injury is not considered to be as serious as the sprain from last season. In fact, the surgery Tannehill had on his right ankle at the end of 2022 could actually help him return from this injury faster.

But even with the bye week to get extra rest, that return doesn't look like it's going to happen against Atlanta.

"Tennessee Titans quarterback Ryan Tannehill is currently in a cast for a high ankle sprain, sources say, an injury that's similar to the injury he suffered last year that necessitated surgery but is not considered as significant," wrote Rapoport in his report. "Tannehill is using a cast so he doesn't put weight on his ankle, but he did not opt for surgery this time. While Tannehill hasn't been ruled out for the Titans' Oct. 29 game against the Falcons (Tennessee is on a bye this week), it's unlikely that he will be able to play."

The Titans are preparing rookie quarterback Will Levis and second-year quarterback Malik Willis to start in Tannehill’s place against the Falcons. Mike Vrabel and the Titans' coaching staff are yet to make a decision about who will be the starter.

Levis has been inactive for each of Tennessee’s first six games of the season with Willis serving as the backup for Tannehill. Willis came in relief of Tannehill in London, and finished the day 3-for-4 on pass attempts with 74 passing yards.

In 2022, Willis really struggled in his three starts in place of Tannehill. He concluded his rookie season with a passer rating of 42.8.

It will be interesting to monitor Tannehill's status as game day against the Falcons gets closer. If things continue progressing how they are right now and Tannehill is unable to play, the Titans will have to turn around and play the Pittsburgh Steelers on Thursday Night Football just a few days after the game against the Falcons. Missing one game could mean missing both games for the 35-year-old veteran.
