NASHVILLE — The landscape of the AFC South took another drastic shift on Wednesday morning with the Houston Texans acquiring star wide receiver Stefon Diggs from the Buffalo Bills.
The Texans will receive Diggs, a 2024 sixth-round pick and a 2025 fifth-round pick from Buffalo in exchange for a 2025 second-round selection (via MIN).
Another star receiver being added to the division will impact the Tennessee Titans for obvious reasons. But the Diggs blockbuster may have also complicated the Titans' position in the 2024 NFL Draft.
Titans trade back partner
With Diggs moving from Buffalo to Houston, the Bills are currently sitting with a weak wide receiving corps around Josh Allen in 2024.
As of this moment, Buffalo has just four wide receivers – Mack Hollins, Curtis Samuel, Khalil Shakir, and Justin Shorter. There is a clear need for the Bills to not just add to that group, but add some high-end talent to that group in the 2024 NFL Draft.
Perhaps that makes them a candidate to trade up for one of the top receivers in the upcoming draft class. That would also open up an opportunity for the Titans to trade all the way back from No. 7 to No. 28 and get a haul of picks in the process.
Using the 2024 NFL Draft Pick Value Trade on various websites like walterfootball.com and drafttek.com, the Titans' first-round pick (No. 7 overall) is labeled with a value of "1500." The Bills' first-round pick (No. 28 overall) is labeled with a value of "660," and their second-round pick (No. 60 overall) is valued at "300."
If we're going off of those values, a trade between the Titans and Bills for pick 7 would probably have to include a 2024 first-rounder (No. 28), 2024 second-rounder (No. 60), and Buffalo's first-round pick in the 2025 NFL Draft.
That's at least worth considering if you're Ran Carthon and the Titans, especially since we know Carthon loves the depth at offensive tackle in this draft class. That would leave the Titans with three picks in the Top 60.
Is that a trade I'd make personally? No. I'm firm on my belief that Tennessee will have an opportunity to draft a blue chip wide receiver or offensive tackle with the seventh overall pick and they need to take advantage. I want Malik Nabers or Joe Alt, and I don't believe the drop in talent will be worth the addition picks. Often times quality is better than quantity.
But just because I wouldn't do it doesn't mean it's not a possibility. At the very least, more options opened up for Tennessee today and further complicated the decision that need to be made regarding the draft.
