The Tennessee Titans fired offensive coordinator Todd Downing on Monday after a highly disappointing season on the offensive side of the ball.
While most expected this news to come, Titans left tackle Taylor Lewan revealed that Downing might have known his firing was coming before anyone else did.
On Lewan’s latest episode of Bussin’ With the Boys, Titans quarterback Josh Dobbs sat alongside him and his co-host Will Compton. During the episode, Lewan received a text message from former Titans OL Dennis Kelly, who relayed the news of Downing’s firing to him.
Without much time to digest the information, Lewan shared his thoughts on Downing.
“I think Todd is an incredibly good person, he’s awesome to be around, he’s a great guy. You kinda could tell, obviously the whole season everyone is calling for his head, that the writing was on the wall.”
Lewan then dove into a story, in which he detailed an interaction at Titans practice that led him to believe Downing knew he was going to be fired after the year.
“There was a moment when I went out to a walk through, right before (Josh Dobbs) got there, I was literally in a poncho, and Todd was like ‘Oh, are you playing tight end?’ And I was like, 'Yeah, I’m gonna play tight end next year for you.’ And he was like, ‘Oh, are you going to,’ and he recited some random high school football team. I think Todd knew he was going to be fired.”
Downing was not the only Titans coach that didn’t survive the NFL’s Black Monday. Offensive line coach Keith Carter, secondary coach Anthony Midget, and offensive skills assistant Erik Frazier were also let go.
