Tennessee uses wide splits and tempo to put defenses in conflict. And the narrative is that the offense is "gimmicky" or "too simple".
On Thursday, UConn Huskies head coach Jim Mora, who will travel to Knoxville to take on Tennessee on Saturday, was asked by WNML's Vince Ferrara about the Vols' offense and whether or not it translates to the NFL.
"I think there's some validity to it (not translating to the NFL) in certain ways, but I also think that there's things that they do that absolutely translate to the NFL," said Mora. "I think where you would run into trouble — I don't think it's the structure or the scheme — they do great things, I don't know that you can operate at the pace that they operate at in the NFL. Simply because you're dealing with older athletes along the offensive line who are not going to want to do that. And they're going to be very resistant to it. You have depth issues at receiver. You're only going to have five active on Sundays."
"So to operate that warp speed, it's really going to be hard to do," added Mora.
That's a fair point from Mora. But that's not really a knock on Tennessee's offense preparing players for the NFL. It speaks more to the reasons why Heupel likely wouldn't work out as an NFL head coach (which Tennessee fans should be happy to hear — especially after Tony Romo's comments about Heupel last season).
Tennessee and UConn kick off at 12:00 PM ET on Saturday.
