The Tennessee Vols are turning the page this week from their loss to the Florida Gators from this past weekend to their matchup against UTSA in Knoxville on Saturday.
UTSA went 11-3 last season under head coach Jeff Traylor, but much like the Vols, they're off to a tough start in 2023.
The Roadrunners will arrive in Knoxville this weekend with a 1-2 record after suffering a loss against Army.
After UTSA's loss on Saturday, Traylor expressed some frustration with himself and his team.
"It's just kind of been the whole year so far," said Traylor when asked about his disappointment level this season. "I mean it's a perfect storm so far. It just really is. Getting Army on a short week. We played a darn near rival game versus Houston, a rival game versus Texas State. You follow up short a week with Army. Now we go to Tennessee. We're just not doing well. I don't know what it is. It's obviously the football coach because we're not getting it done right now."
UTSA is coming off Conference-USA championships in back-to-back seasons. And Traylor has won back-to-back Conference-USA coach of the year awards.
But for whatever reason, the Roadrunners are struggling early this season (though it should be noted that they also started 1-2 last season before finishing 11-3).
UTSA's early season struggles are a reminder for fans that a new season means new problems/issues that need to be fixed for college football programs.
Tennessee and UTSA will each begin (or continue) figuring out how to fix some of those issues this week.
Traylor, however, knows that it won't be easy to get his team's issues fixed on Saturday in Neyland Stadium. He's expecting a fired up crowd and a Tennessee team that's eager to turn things around coming off a loss.
"Unbelievable crowd, coming off a loss — which you never want to play a team after a loss," said Traylor on Monday morning while meeting with reporters. "It's going to be a rough environment against a good football team."
Tennessee and UTSA kick off at 4:00 PM ET on Saturday. The game can be seen on SEC Network.
