Virginia Cavaliers head coach Tony Elliott couldn't hide how impressed he is with Tennessee Vols quarterback Joe Milton during an appearance on WNML's "The Nation" this past weekend.
Elliott joined the program to discuss Virginia football and the Cavaliers' upcoming matchup with Tennessee (September 2 at 11:00 AM CT in Nashville) and he was unsurprisingly asked for his thoughts on Milton.
It's obvious that Elliott's been watching film of Milton because the first thing he brought up about Tennessee's starting quarterback wasn't the rocket arm that has captivated college football fans the last couple of years.
Instead, Elliott pointed out Milton's demeanor in the pocket and his ability to control the line of scrimmage as what stands out the most about the redshirt senior quarterback.
"Oh man, you just watch him on tape, the first thing that to me, that I look at, is just his demeanor in the pocket," explained Elliott. "His demeanor, you know, with the motions — how he sends guys in motion. And what you can tell is that he's very confident. Especially the end of the season when you watch him. He was very, very confident in what he was doing. He had command of the system, which is critical. And then you watch him throw the ball and it's like, wow. Man, there were a couple of throws in that last game of the season where he's throwing the ball many, many yards down the field and he's throwing it to the widest side of the field, outside the numbers. That just tells you the arm strength."
"And then you watch him, he threw some dimes for touchdowns on in-breaking routes and crossing routes," continued Elliott. "And so he can make every throw. And then you watch him take off and run and it's like oh Lord, he's got another element to him that he can run the football. So biggest thing to me is what you see is you just see him calm, collected, poised, right? And then he has the big arm but he can make all the throws. And when he needs to use his legs, he's very, very effective."
It's clear that Elliott doesn't view Milton as a one-trick pony — and he shouldn't.
Milton is eager to prove that he's the total package as a quarterback. And it sounds like Virginia will be preparing for that version of Joe Milton.
