Former Tennessee Vols offensive coordinator Alex Golesh, who accepted an offer to become the new head coach at South Florida this past weekend, confirmed this week that he won't be coaching UT's offense in the Orange Bowl against Clemson.
Golesh was asked by a reporter in Tampa about his Orange Bowl plans and the former Vols offensive coordinator appeared conflicted, but he's decided, as he should, to go all-in at his new job.
"I took the job Saturday night and I've been here since Saturday night," said Golesh. "In a lot of ways, I probably wish I could finish what we started there (at Tennessee), but this is too big of a task to go and attack. So got here Saturday night, broke Saturday night, been plugging ever since, about as hard you can."
"Hopefully, get a chance to go down there (to Miami) and support the team and spend the night over there," added Golesh. "They deserve it, but I'm going to be here (at USF instead of coaching in the Orange Bowl)."
Golesh really doesn't have any choice but to lock in at USF immediately.
In a time before the early signing period and the NCAA transfer portal, maybe Golesh stays in Knoxville through the end of December and then gets to work at USF.
But Golesh has to hit the ground running in Tampa if he's going to be successful at USF. He has to evaluate his new roster, figure out who is staying and who is leaving, and then figure out what needs USF has in the portal. Golesh also has to figure out who he has committed in the 2023 class. And he has to do all of that while putting together a coaching staff as well.
There's a lot of work to be done at USF. And while it's obvious that Golesh would love to finish what he started with the Vols, it's completely understandable that he has to roll his sleeves up at USF and get to work immediately.
