One of the biggest topics in the college sports world over the last two weeks has been Alabama wide receiver Jermaine Burton's decision to slap/punch a female Tennessee Vols fan as he left the field at Neyland Stadium after Bama's 52-49 loss to UT.
The incident was caught on camera.
Here's Alabama head coach Nick Saban's response to the situation:
Burton wasn't suspended by Alabama. And many national media outlets suggested that Tennessee fans storming the field was the real story, not that Burton put his hands on a female fan.
On Wednesday, Vols head coach Josh Heupel was asked during the weekly SEC coaches teleconference about the incident and if he thought Burton should've been suspended.
Heupel, unsurprisingly, didn't have a strong take on the incident. In fact, he said he hasn't even seen the video (not sure I buy that, Josh).
“Man, I’m going to be honest, I haven’t seen the video or paid much attention to anything that’s happening outside of our program," said Heupel. "There’s enough going on here in Knoxville that we’ve got to continue to develop our roster and our program. So don’t really deal with hypotheticals as far as that happening inside of our own program.”
That's probably the right way for Heupel to handle that. If he says much else, he's going to get slammed by the media for taking a stand when Saban says there's more to the story.
Heupel has done a lot of things right during his first 21 months in Knoxville and one of those things is the way he's flawlessly handled the media so far.
