Tennessee Vols legend Trey Smith is a Super Bowl champion thanks to the Kansas City Chiefs' 38-35 win against the Philadelphia Eagles in Super Bowl LVII.
Smith, who started at right guard for the Chiefs, played a big role in KC's win, along with the rest of Kansas City's offensive line.
The Eagles had one of the best pass rushes in the NFL all season. But on Sunday night in Arizona, Philadelphia didn't manage a single sack. And they only had one tackle for loss.
That's because Smith and the Chiefs' offensive line played lights out all night and kept quarterback Patrick Mahomes from getting hit.
Unfortunately for Smith and Kansas City, that won't be the story of the game.
Instead, everyone's going to be talking about the defensive holding call on the Eagles on the Chiefs' game-winning drive that provided Kansas City with a critical first down.
Thanks to that defensive holding the call, the Chiefs got a first down instead of having to settle for a field goal with nearly two minutes left on the clock (which would've given Philly the ball back with plenty of time to score).
After the penalty, Kansas City was essentially able to run out the clock and kick the game-winning field goal.
The Eagles got the ball back with less than 10 seconds remaining in the game and all they could manage was a desperation heave that fell incomplete as time expired.
After the game, Philadelphia cornerback James Bradberry took responsibility for the hold. But that won't change the call from being a hot topic this week that overshadows the Chiefs' Super Bowl win.
Years from now, folks may forget about the controversial call. But for now, it's going to be the main way this game is remembered.
