Tennessee Vols quarterback Joe Milton doesn't like bringing attention to himself because of his unusually strong arm, but it's unavoidable when he's consistently wowing fans and media by throwing the ball essentially as far as he wants.
Because of Milton's strong arm, there have been numerous folks over the years who have suggested that the talented quarterback play baseball. The feeling is that he'd have a ridiculous fastball and could dominate as a pitcher.
On Wednesday in Miami, Milton, who is from Florida, was asked if he's ever played baseball.
Milton revealed that he wanted to try baseball in high school, but his football coach quickly nixed that idea.
"I threw the ball once," said Milton when asked if he's ever played baseball. "And then my high school coach told me not to do it anymore. It was kind of one of those, 'let's try it out once, if you like it, you can kind of stick to it'. I did like it, but he told me I couldn't do it. He wanted me to finish playing football."
Milton added that he was trying to be a pitcher.
It's tough for kids these days to excel in multiple sports — due to youth coaches wanting kids to specialize in one sport (which isn't a good idea). But it certainly would've been fun to see Milton on the bump while throwing heat. Maybe Vols baseball coach Tony Vitello can get Milton on the field some this spring and see what he's got.
