One of the biggest questions surrounding the Tennessee Vols ahead of their matchup against the Clemson Tigers in the Orange Bowl involves UT's offensive playcalling.
Tennessee lost offensive coordinator/tight ends coach Alex Golesh earlier this month as he left Knoxville to become the head coach at USF.
Vols head coach Josh Heupel hasn't hired an offensive coordinator yet and there's been very little movement on that front as the focus has been on preparing for Clemson and managing the roster.
The assumption, however, is that Tennessee quarterbacks coach Joey Halzle will be promoted to offensive coordinator and Heupel will hire a tight ends coach.
On Wednesday, Halzle was asked who will handle playcalling duties in the Orange Bowl.
Halzle, unsurprisingly, didn't reveal Tennessee's exact plan.
"It's always going to be communal up there," said Halzle on Wednesday. "You know, I'm his eyes up top, he's down on the field. As a whole staff, we'll get to the right calls together."
It's not a surprise that Halzle didn't give anything away — playcalling duties have mostly been a mystery under Heupel.
I'd be surprised, though, if Halzle isn't the Vols' next offensive coordinator — though I think it'll be Heupel calling plays next season with input from Halzle (and whoever else is in the booth with Halzle next fall).
Regardless of who's calling plays, fans shouldn't fret too much. The offense is going to continue to be Heupel's baby. There's input from everyone on the Vols' staff, but ultimately the offense is Heupel's vision.
