A couple of Tennessee Vols games were listed by 247Sports this week among the 24 most important games of the 2024 season.
247Sports listed Tennessee's matchup against Alabama on October 19 and their game against Georgia on November 16 as two games that could shape the 2024 college football season.
The game against Alabama on October 19 is essentially a must-win for the Vols with Nick Saban no longer on the sidelines for the Crimson Tide. Alabama is entering a new era and it's the perfect time for Tennessee to change the narrative of this rivalry.
Objectively, it's also simply a game the Vols should win. Tennessee is entering year four of the Josh Heupel era with a team that's expected to compete for a spot in the College Football Playoff in 2024. There's no reason they should lose to a first-year SEC head coach in Kalen DeBoer.
As for the game against Georgia, that's one where the Bulldogs will obviously be favored. That's not say the Vols can't get a win in Athens, but it's a "I'll believe it when I see it" type of game.
Because of the expanded playoff, Tennessee can probably afford two losses and still be included in the 12-team playoff. That makes beating Georgia a little less urgent — though that's obviously still a game the Vols badly want to win.
