San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Jauan Jennings has been absent from recent practices as he’s dealing with a calf injury.

The former Tennessee Vols standout, however, is hoping to receive a new contract from the 49ers, which has led to some speculation that Jennings staying out of practice is a business decision.

49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan was asked this week if Jennings’ absence from practice has more to do with health or business.

“You can ask him that, but he tells me it’s his calf and the calf shows,” said Shanahan. “So, got to be delicate with those calves.”

Calf injuries can be tricky. Keeping Jennings out is the right call by the 49ers. The last thing San Francisco needs is for Jennings’ injury to linger into the season.

As for a potential hold out, I would be surprised if that’s even on Jennings’ mind. I mean, this is a player who made it known (via agents) that he wants a new contract from the 49ers. And then he reported to training camp on time and participated in practice/workouts before sustaining the injury.

I’m sure Jennings is getting advice to not try to push through the injury. But otherwise, I can’t see him sitting out of practice as a negotiation tactic. That’s just not who Jennings is as a competitor.
