When San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Jauan Jennings threw a touchdown pass to running back Christian McCaffrey in Super Bowl LVIII, Tennessee Vols fans immediately recognized the play from UT's game against the Florida Gators in 2015.
Here's Jennings' touchdown pass against the Kansas City Chiefs in Super Bowl LVIII.
And here's the touchdown that Jennings threw to quarterback Josh Dobbs against Florida in the Swamp in 2015.
The plays look identical, right? Surely the 49ers saw that play from Jennings in college and decided to incorporate it into their playbook.
Except that apparently wasn't the case.
Dobbs, who signed with the 49ers earlier this offseason, told reporters that San Fransisco never asked Jennings about the play against Florida in 2015.
"Obviously, Tennessee media jumped at every single replay that they could make," said Dobbs on Wednesday. "And then I actually texted [Jennings], I think a couple of weeks after the game, because he was in Dallas and we were going to work out together. I was like 'So did they ask you about your play from Florida when you threw the touchdown to me?' So he said they didn't ask him about it, but I'm sure they got it from somewhere, knowing that he could make that throw across the field. It was cool to see. For him to throw a touchdown in the Super Bowl, not many guys can say that — especially not playing quarterback. A pretty cool moment for him."
Sounds like it was all just a coincidence — though I'm not totally sure I buy that. That play in the Super Bowl, after all, was a carbon copy of the play against Florida.
