The defining moment in the Tennessee Vols’ 37-20 loss to the Alabama Crimson Tide this past Saturday came on the final play before halftime.

With Tennessee trailing 16-7, Vols quarterback Joey Aguilar threw a pass to tight end Miles Kitselman that was intercepted and returned for a touchdown by Alabama defensive back Zabien Brown.

That 14 point swing significantly changed the way the game was played. If the Vols score a touchdown on that play and go into the half down just two points, both teams come out in the second half with a completely different approach.

Alabama defensive coordinator Kane Wommack reveals what was said to Bama’s players during the timeout before the pick-six

Tennessee used its final timeout of the half with nine seconds remaining in the second quarter. After the Vols showed their personnel grouping out of the timeout, Alabama used a timeout.

On Monday, Crimson Tide defensive coordinator Kane Wommack revealed what was said on Alabama’s sideline during that time out.

“We had come out in a different personnel grouping in the play before,” said Wommack. “And then we had asked for a timeout so that we could see what they were going to be in. And then we brought the guys on the sideline and talked about, ‘Hey, listen, this is probably going to be some type of power pass situation, right? Have your eyes in the right place, do your job, do your 1/11th for the defense’. And Zabien was just all over it. In the moment, his eyes are in the right place. He knows what to expect. He does his job….he goes and makes the play.”

Sometimes coaches get too much credit and sometimes they get too much blame. That play, though, came down to Alabama simply out-coaching Tennessee. And it was likely the difference in the game.
