The Tennessee Vols aren't favorites to beat the Alabama Crimson Tide in Knoxville this upcoming weekend, but there will be plenty of analysts who pick UT to pull the upset.
While we don't know what the outcome of the game will be, we do know one thing — this is the Vols' best chance to beat Alabama since 2009 or 2015.
Unfortunately for the Vols, Alabama's near loss to the Texas A&M Aggies on Saturday night in Tuscaloosa dropped the Tide from the No. 1 spot in the AP Top 25 poll to the No. 3 spot.
Tennessee, meanwhile, climbed two spots in the Top from No. 8 to No. 6.
Tennessee hasn't beaten the No. 1 team in the nation since 1985 when a Johnny Majors-led Vols team beat Bo Jackson and Auburn in Neyland. UT beat the Tigers 38-20 while holding Jackson to 80 rushing yards.
Bama slipping in the polls robs the Vols of a legitimate chance to beat No. 1 for the first time in almost 40 years.
Tennessee fans won't pretend to care where Alabama was ranked if the Vols are able to get the win.
But I think deep down every Vol fan wishes the Crimson Tide were still in that top spot. Because I can't imagine anything sweeter for a Tennessee fan than beating a No. 1 ranked Alabama team.
Of course, if the Vols continue this pace, they could end up being ranked No. 1 by the end of the season. And that might be the one thing that would be sweeter than beating No. 1 Alabama.
