While the Tennessee Vols are in the midst of preparing for a Sweet 16 matchup against the Kentucky Wildcats, the program is also evaluating players that are in the NCAA transfer portal, which officially opened this week.

On3's Jamie Shaw noted on Tuesday that one player he expects the Vols to be "involved" with is UNC-Greensboro transfer guard Donovan Atwell.

Atwell, 6-foot-5 from Charlotte, NC, averaged 13.3 points per game this past season while shooting nearly 40 percent on three-point attempts.

"Expect programs like South Carolina, Tennessee, LSU, and Wake Forest to be involved here," wrote Shaw in regards to Atwell. "Shooting is at a premium so continue to pay attention to see if anyone else jumps in."

Atwell could be a potential replacement for Chaz Lanier at Tennessee.

Adding players out of the portal is always a gamble because of the limited time that programs have to recruit transfers.

Rick Barnes and his staff, however, have done a tremendous job the last couple of years of finding players who not only fill important needs for the Vols, but also fit in well with Tennessee's culture.

There are still some misses here and there, but Barnes and his staff consistently get it right for the most part (Dalton Knecht, Jordan Gainey, Chaz Lanier, Felix Okpara, just to name a few).

It's still a bit early to forecast where Atwell will land, but it's clear that the Vols are looking to add a guard who can shoot well from beyond the arc.
