The Tennessee Vols will open the 2025 college football season as the No. 24 ranked team in the AP Top 25 poll.

Tennessee finished the 2024 season ranked No. 9 in the AP Top 25 after their loss to the Ohio State Buckeyes in the first round of the College Football Playoff.

The main reason for the low expectations for Tennessee in 2025 is mostly due to the loss of starting quarterback Nico Iamaleava (as well as UT’s thin wide receiver room and the uncertainty along the offensive line).

Not every AP Top 25 voter, however, has low expectations for the Vols this fall.

Two voters actually had Tennessee inside the top 10 of their preseason rankings.

Boston.com’s Trevor Hass has the Volunteers at No. 9 on his top 25 ballot.

The Roanoke Times’ Damien Sordelett also has Tennessee at No. 9 on his top 25 ballot.

Opinions are certainly mixed on the Vols entering the 2025 season. ESPN’s Rece Davis, for example, didn’t even include Tennessee on his top 25 ballot.

The Vols will get their first chance to prove Davis (and the other doubters) wrong on August 30 when they open the 2025 season in Atlanta against the Syracuse Orange.
