Tennessee Vols infielder Gavin Kilen was a hero twice on Thursday against the Texas Longhorns.
Kilen gave the Vols a 5-4 lead in the top of the 9th via a solo home run. In the 12th inning, Kilen gave the Vols the lead for good thanks to a double to the gap that plated two runs.
When Kilen hit the ball in the 12th inning, he took his time getting out of the box, clearly thinking he had hit a home run (I thought he hit a home run, too…I think everyone thought that).
Instead, the ball was nearly caught, deflecting off the glove of a Texas outfielder. Kilen only made it to second base because of his slow exit from the box.
After the Vols' 7-5 to win, Kilen was asked during an interview with SEC Network's Kris Budden if he thought the ball was gone.
And Kilen delivered a perfect answer.
"You know, I thought I hit it off the scoreboard," said Kilen. "I think I got humbled pretty good today when that didn't go out. That should've been a sac fly. But, again, just doing my job and doing what I can to help us win. I probably shouldn't have done that. I should've ran hard, maybe would've got to third."
No worries, Gavin. It happens to some of the best players in the world. The New York media, for example, has spent the last 72 hours giving Mets outfielder Juan Soto hell for not getting to second on a ball that he hit off the Green Monster in Fenway. And that guy's making $765 over 15 years.
NIL money is good, but it's not that good.
