Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow is being used as a "secret weapon" this spring.
But it has nothing to do with the Bengals.
And it's not going to improve Cincinnati's chances of winning the Super Bowl this upcoming season.
Burrow was back in Baton Rouge this past weekend for LSU's spring football game. The former No. 1 overall draft pick, who played at LSU from 2018 to 2019, attended the game at the behest of Tigers head coach Brian Kelly. Bengals fans likely remember Kelly from his time as the Cincinnati Bearcats' head coach (2006 to 2009).
(Kelly, previously the head coach at Notre Dame, took over as LSU's head coach after the 2021 season. Ed Orgeron was Burrow's coach in Baton Rouge. Orgeron, however, was let go after the 2021 season.)
Kelly wanted Burrow at the spring game to help LSU in recruiting. Burrow, after all, is one of the most popular athletes on the planet these days. And having him at the LSU spring game certainly made an impact on elite recruits that are deciding where they want to play in college.
“Joe Burrow is coming back,” said Kelly last week. “He’s going to help us in recruiting. He’s a pretty good recruiter. He recruits quarterbacks really well, too. We have a number of alums that are coming back that we’re going to obviously have them involved in recruiting…We’ll have a player panel where it gives us an opportunity to discuss what it’s like to be part of this program, so the recruits will get that kind of side of it as well. They’ll get to see the families. We’re going to have a crawfish boil after the game. They’ll get a chance to really see the inside outs of the program.”
Burrow is a massive asset for LSU. There are only a few truly elite quarterbacks in the NFL and Burrow is on that list. That means LSU is one of the very few college football programs that can claim one of the top quarterbacks in the NFL…and that's absolutely a great selling point for the Tigers.
By the way, Bengals wide receiver Ja'Marr Chase, Burrow's superstar teammate at LSU, was also at the Tigers' spring game this past weekend.
The Bayou Bengals indeed.
