National college football reporter says recently hired SEC head coach is already on the hot seat
There will inevitably be some coaching changes in the SEC after the 2023 season. There are almost always coaching changes. There are almost always coaching changes.
Since 2006, there has only been one offseason (2018 going into 2019) where there weren't any head coaching changes in the SEC.
In some years, it's obvious where the change will be. For example, I think everyone expected that Bryan Harsin wouldn't last at Auburn beyond the 2022 season.
In other years, it's not quite as obvious.
Entering the 2023 season, there are a couple of hot seat options that make sense.
Jimbo Fisher, despite his large buyout, could be coaching for his job after Texas A&M's disappointing 5-7 season in 2022.
Missouri's Eliah Drinkwitz just received a contract extension this offseason, but he's yet to win more than six games in a season (Tennessee fired Jeremy Pruitt less than a year after he received an extension).
Neither of those coaches, however, was listed among The Athletic's Stewart Mandel's top seven "hot seats" this week.
Mandel included one SEC coach among his top seven hot seats — Florida's Billy Napier.
From The Athletic: I wouldn’t normally include a second-year coach who went to a bowl his first season, but the confidence level among Gators fans is quite low after a disappointing season, disappointing recruiting class and the Jaden Rashada saga. Plus, coaches getting fired after two seasons is no longer unusual.
I wouldn't be surprised if Napier turns things around this season and Florida wins eight or nine games. I also wouldn't be surprised if he has another lackluster season (by Florida's standards).
And if there's one thing we've learned about Florida over the last decade, it's that they don't put up with mediocrity for long. Remember, the Gators fired Jim McElwain after back-to-back SEC East division titles. And Dan Mullen was fired just two years after winning 11 games. If Napier doesn't show significant improvement in 2023, it's very possible that he'll be looking for a new job next offseason.
Arkansas State head coach Butch Jones, a former Tennessee Vols head coach, was also listed among Mandel's top seven hot seats. Jones is 5-19 through two seasons at Arkansas State.
