On3's J.D. PicKell made quite the statement this past week about the Tennessee Vols' offense in 2024.
PicKell praised Tennessee head coach Josh Heupel as an offensive coordinator because of the job he did last season with Joe Milton under center. And PicKell thinks in 2024, with former five-star recruit Nico Iamaleava operating as Tennessee's starting quarterback, that Vols fans could see an "explosion offensively" on Rocky Top.
"Last year was a testament to how good of an offensive coordinator Josh Heupel really is," said PicKell. "Because with Joe Milton playing quarterback for you, I think you had a lot of the things that you needed. Maybe not everything you wanted, but a lot of things that you needed. Clearly, you scored 32 points a game, so you were able to be successful in that regard. But the fact that you, in my opinion, from an ability standpoint upgrade with Nico Iamaleava running the show for you, I think you're going to see an explosion offensively. Because this receiving corps add[ed] some guys. Whether it be Mike Matthews, [a] five-star true freshman who is going to ball for them. Whether it be Squirrel White getting a chance to take another step, Bru McCoy getting healthy. I think that's going to create more options for [Tennessee's offense]."
"And also we talked about it, if they go even faster with this radio communication, it's gonna be a nightmare to play against Tennessee," continued PicKell. "They spread the field against you, They're gonna make you cover all 53.3 yards of width of the field. And when they win their matchup, they got a quarterback now that can consistently hit the bullseye for you. That's the difference. I think consistency from Nico is going to make this offense really hum. Tennessee, without question, one of the best offenses in the country going into the season if, and it's a big if, Nico Iamaleava hits the ground running like I think he's going to hit the ground running."
Tennessee's offense lost a ridiculous amount of talent after the 2022 season. And while the 2023 offense had some rough moments, the Vols still scored over 30 points a game last season. Not bad for a "down season".
The sky is the limit for the Vols' offense with the best player from the 2023 recruiting class poised to start at quarterback for Tennessee this fall.
Off-field win that Josh Heupel and the Tennessee Vols aren’t receiving nearly enough credit for this offseason
It was a pretty big deal that flew under the radar
