A duo of well-known national college football analysts made themselves look foolish this weekend after throwing shade at Tennessee Vols head coach Josh Heupel in the aftermath of UT's 33-27 win against the Kentucky Wildcats.

While reviewing this weekend's games, On3's Andy Staples (previously of The Athletic and Sports Illustrated) and Jesse Simonton took a shot at Heupel for his "complaints" about officiating in recent weeks.

The Vols have been heavily penalized the last two weeks while their opponents, despite numerous blatant violations, haven't been penalized for a single live-ball penalty

"Josh Heupel needs to quit bitching about the officials," said Simonton. "I mean, that's just — he did another, he's just not going to endear himself with that group when he continues to show them up in the post-game press conferences."

"What are you complaining about, you won," added Staples.

I re-watched the last two post-game press conferences after hearing that exchange so I could transcribe all of Heupel's complaints.

Here's all of the complaints that Heupel had during the post-game pressers after the Alabama and Kentucky games.

…….

Nothing. That's right. Heupel didn't say a single word. He declined to answer questions about the officiating. He said no comment and moved on. What else is he supposed to do? Lie and say it was fine? No, the officiating has been terrible. So instead of "showing up" the officials, Heupel went with silence on the issue. I guess Staples and Simonton think he should bend the knee to the SEC? Tennessee has been getting hosed the last two weeks. Objectively, it's been awful.

Of course, it's hard to take Staples seriously when he also made this statement during his conversation with Simonton.

"The problem is, we've yet to see that old Art Briles offense beat a Nick Saban or Kirby Smart coached defense. We haven't seen it yet. I'm sure it'll happen eventually, but it seems like a bad stylistic matchup."

Staples is supposed to be one of the bigger voices in college football and the guy doesn't know that Tennessee beat Alabama (which was coached by Nick Saban) last season in what was widely viewed as one of the best games of the season?

Hard to take anyone serious when they throw out comments like that. By the way, both of these guys went to Florida. Do with that what you will.

Maybe it's time for Tennessee to embrace being the villains of college football (much like Tony Vitello and the UT baseball team have become the villains of college baseball), because it's clear that the national media has some sort of weird vendetta against them.
