The Tennessee Vols made a huge addition earlier this week by landing Oregon transfer wide receiver Dont'e Thornton.
Thornton, a Baltimore native, is a big play waiting to happen.
The former four-star recruit, who was rated as the No. 7 wide receiver in the 2021 recruiting class, is 6-foot-5 and runs the 40-yard dash in the 4.43 range.
That's the definition of "prototypical wide receiver size and speed".
Thornton is confident in himself and his ability to stretch the field.
In fact, he told VolQuest after committing to Tennessee that Vols quarterback Joe Milton won't be overthrowing him, despite the Florida native's big arm.
“He isn’t overthrowing me,” said Thornton to VolQuest's Austin Price. “He looks effortless when he throws the ball. It throws me off because he is back there and toss it up and it’s a 60-yard bomb and I’m like dang.”
The Vols are losing one of the best big-play threats the program has ever seen in wide receiver Jalin Hyatt. But with Thornton on the way to Rocky Top, combined with rising sophomore wide receiver Squirrel White's elite speed, there should be no shortage of big plays in Knoxville next fall.
