Current Tennessee Vols player gets hit with an expletive-laden chant in his return to Vanderbilt
The former Vandy forward had a rude return to Memorial Gym.
There’s never any love lost between the Tennessee Volunteers and the Vanderbilt Commodores regardless of sport. And on the hardwood, that’s no exception. The intrastate rivals did battle again on Saturday at Memorial Gym in Nashville, and as is typically the case, the crowd was bipartisan between those in orange and those in black.
However, Saturday’s matchup involved a little bit of extra spice. Current Tennessee forward Jaylen Carey came over to the Vols last offseason via the transfer portal. And after committing, he made some waves when he said he didn’t care “about no black and gold”.
Vandy fans certainly haven’t forgotten, and they let Carey know about it during the second half. With Carey at the line, the fans started audibly chanting “(expletive) you, Carey”.

Vanderbilt fans aren’t normally known for getting loose in the student section, at least compared to other schools around the country. But these are odd times we live in, and players leaving for other schools and coming back has become more and more commonplace. Add in the rivalry aspect of this, and it’s not hard to see where the vitriol came from here.
Carey had a big hand in the Commodores’ 76-75 last second win last season in Nashville. He totaled 14 points on 5-6 shooting with a game-high 10 rebounds off the bench. He averaged 8.0 points per game with 5.7 rebounds per game in 20.2 minutes per game.
This season at Tennessee, Carey has put up very similar per game totals, with 7.8 points and 6.0 rebounds in 18.4 minutes.
Oh, and as for the last laugh on Saturday, Carey and his Tennessee teammates got it with a 69-65 victory.
