Oregon Ducks head coach Dan Lanning is one of the leading candidates to replace Nick Saban at Alabama after the legendary head coach stunningly retired on Wednesday.
Lanning, who was a graduate assistant at Alabama in 2015, is 22-5 in his first two seasons as Oregon's head coach. Before landing at Oregon, Lanning was on Kirby Smart's staff at Georgia for four seasons. He's seemingly a perfect fit for Alabama.
If Lanning ends up being the guy at Alabama, it will create an opening at Oregon. And a former Tennessee Vols assistant could be a great fit to take over for Lanning.
Former Vols offensive coordinator Alex Golesh just completed his first season as the head coach at USF, going 7-6 a year after the program went just 1-11 under previous head coach Jeff Scott.
Golesh would seemingly be a perfect fit for the Ducks, as long as he could bring a strong defensive coordinator with him (maybe he could retain current Ducks co-defensive coordinator Chris Hampton).
The Ducks are known for their high-flying offenses (they had the No. 2 scoring offense in college football in 2023) and Golesh would certainly continue that tradition as he runs essentially the same offense that Josh Heupel runs at Tennessee.
Golesh is clearly a rising star in college football. And it won't be long before bigger programs come calling. He might not want to leave USF after just one season, but I don't think anyone would blame him for jumping at the Oregon job if it comes open in the wake of Saban's retirement.
