With the NCAA Transfer Portal being open the last couple of weeks, we have already seen a long list of talented college football players find new homes. For the remaining players in the pool, options are starting to get narrowed down, and favorites are separating themselves. That’s the case for former Washington State defensive tackle David Gusta, who is the top ranked defensive lineman uncommitted in the portal according to 247Sports.
The 6-3, 302-pound defensive lineman has been generating major interest from all across college football since he entered. According to 247Sports National College Football writer Chris Hummer, Gusta has set up three visits to the SEC. He will be visiting Texas A&M, Kentucky, and Tennessee.
Gusta began his career as a defensive end recruit out of Cajon High School in San Bernardino, California. Since then, Gusta has gained about 50 pounds and developed into one of the better defensive linemen on the West Coast the last couple of seasons. The Cougars have asked him to do a lot of the dirty work for the defense, so the box score does not adequately showcase his impact.
Over the course of his career, Gusta ended with 62 total tackles, six tackles for loss, and 1.5 sacks. Gusta also broke up four passes for the Cougars.
As a football player, Gusta is incredibly strong and physical at the point of attack. He’s an easy projection as a nose tackle on his next team, able to take up blockers and play well off of contact. Gusta is also a good enough athlete to expand outward, and play from varying alignments. He should be a versatile piece for defense that wants to play a variety of fronts.
