The Tennessee Vols lost a defensive player to Deion Sanders and the Colorado Buffaloes this week.

On3's Matt Zenitz reported on Wednesday that Vols transfer safety John Slaughter has officially committed to Colorado.

Slaughter entered the NCAA transfer portal earlier this month after spending the first two seasons of his career at Tennessee. The Mississippi native signed with the Vols as a three-star recruit during the 2023 recruiting cycle.

Zenitz noted that Slaughter also recently visited Purdue.

Slaughter totaled six tackles and one interception during his time at Tennessee. He played 54 snaps for the Vols in 2024.

The Vols' depth as safety has thinned this offseason due to a couple of portal losses (safety Jakobe Thomas is also in the transfer portal). Slaughter wasn't expected to be a starter for Tennessee in 2025, but he certainly would've provided important depth in the secondary for the Volunteers.

Slaughter isn't the only Tennessee player that Sanders and the Buffaloes landed this week.

Vols transfer offensive tackle Larry Johnson also committed to Colorado on Wednesday.

Johnson, a former three-star recruit from Savannah, GA, was in the mix for the starting right tackle job at Tennessee this offseason (though the expectation has been that five-star true freshman David Sanders will win that job). While Johnson wasn't expected to win the starting job over Sanders, he likely would've played some important snaps for the Vols in 2025 (Johnson played 133 snaps for Tennessee in 2024).

Welcome to the transfer portal era — where building depth is a nearly impossible task.
