Colorado head coach Deion Sanders' strange decision to demote offensive coordinator Sean Lewis in the middle of the season could hurt the Buffaloes when it comes to landing one of the top 2024 recruits in the nation.
Sanders demoted Lewis ahead of Colorado's 26-19 loss to Oregon State.
The move was strange because while the Buffaloes' offense hasn't been lights out every week this season, they've scored 40 or more points in four of their nine games.
Sanders' decision to demote Lewis and tight ends coach Tim Brewster (Brewster moved to an off-field role so Sanders could move Pat Shurmur from an analyst role to offensive coordinator) is something that 2024 five-star offensive lineman Jordan Seaton, the No. 1 offensive tackle in the nation, took notice of this past weekend.
Seaton, who is also being heavily pursued by the Tennessee Vols, among other programs, took a visit to Colorado this past Saturday. And while he enjoyed his visit and the environment in Boulder, the "uncertainty" with the coaching staff is something that caught his eye.
“The uncertainty of the coaching staff there has my attention," said Seaton to On3 after his visit. "That is something I am watching, too. I watch everything at every school. The highs and the lows are important to me and that is taking so long with my recruitment. I am being very thorough so I will make a good decision in the end. The Colorado coaching situation is something I am watching with them.”
In-season play-calling changes happen from time to time. But it's not like Colorado was putting up putrid offensive numbers like Iowa. The Buffaloes have had some great offensive outputs this season. The defense, however, has failed to show up in some of those games. Regardless of the Buffaloes' final record this season, Sanders has a program that was 1-11 last season moving in the right direction. But it's going to be tough to build anything that lasts in Boulder if he continues to make knee-jerk decisions that make no sense (like demoting Lewis).
Sanders' overreaction to a couple of tough weeks for a program that's still a long way away from being nationally relevant might have cost him a shot at the nation's best offensive lineman.
Seaton is expected to visit Tennessee on November 18 for the Vols' game against Georgia. Alabama, Florida, Oregon, and Ohio State are also in the mix for Seaton.
