Early bowl game prediction for Tennessee football in 2026 isn’t very inspiring for Vols fans
The Tennessee Vols are hoping to return to the College Football Playoff in 2026.
Regardless of what happens with quarterback Joey Aguilar and his attempt to gain an additional season of eligibility, the goal for the Tennessee Vols in 2026 will be the same — reach the College Football Playoff.
Whether or not they get there is anyone’s guess. A lot will depend on how quickly Tennessee’s players pick up new defensive coordinator Jim Knowles’ scheme.
Health, obviously, will play a factor, too.
And whoever is under center — whether it’s Aguilar or redshirt freshman George MacIntyre or true freshman Faizon Brandon — will need to play well.
But make no mistake, Tennessee head coach Josh Heupel’s goal will always be to be the last team standing at the end of the season.
That’s why the latest bowl game prediction for the Vols ahead of the 2026 season is quite underwhelming for fans.
Tennessee predicted to play in the Gator Bowl
The latest bowl game prediction from On3’s Brett McMurphy has the Volunteers playing SMU in the Gator Bowl in Jacksonville.
If Tennessee lands in the Gator Bowl, it probably means that they finished the regular season at 8-4 or 7-5 (Missouri represented the SEC in the Gator Bowl last season after going 8-4 in the regular season).
That’s certainly a realistic scenario that’s on the table for the Vols this season. We saw last year how a play or two can cost a program a win or two. The difference in reaching the playoff and playing in a lackluster bowl game (no offense, Gator Bowl, but these games aren’t what they used to be) can literally come down to a play or two.
The good news for Vols fans, though, is that predictions mean absolutely nothing. No one has a clue how the 2026 season will play out — especially with all the roster turnover from year to year that programs now experience.
If anything, the low expectations are a good thing for Tennessee. It eases the pressure a bit from the national media, and that’s always a positive.
