ESPN draft analyst Field Yates made quite the prediction this week for Georgia Bulldogs wide receiver Ladd McConkey.
McConkey is in Indianapolis this week to take part in the annual NFL scouting combine. And Yates thinks the former SEC standout will put on a show in the 40-yard dash.
"Georgia wide receiver Ladd McConkey will run in the 4.3s," wrote Yates. "McConkey was borderline uncoverable during the Senior Bowl week, flashing the suddenness and route running that travels to the NFL level. He'll pair that with a blazing 40 time, and it will launch another round of conversation about McConkey belonging in the back end of the first round."
McConkey is already one of the best route runners in this year's NFL draft. If he can put up an elite time in the 40-yard dash like Yates thinks he will, he'll likely solidify himself as a first round selection.
It's worth noting, however, that McConkey ran a 4.56 in the 40-yard dash as a high schooler. So while his speed is elite on the field, he might have trouble getting into that 4.3 range. But that shouldn't stop teams from considering McConkey in the first round. He's repeatedly displayed an ability to get open, get past defenders, and produce splash plays.
McConkey is the type of player that can make a big impact as a rookie while playing in a complementary role. Whoever drafts him could be getting a day one contributor.
