On Wednesday, ESPN named a "breakout player to watch" for each preseason top 25 program and their choice for the Tennessee Vols won't come as much of a surprise.
ESPN went with rising redshirt freshman quarterback Nico Iamaleava as the Vols' breakout star to watch in 2024.
From ESPN: Easy call here. It's Nico Iamaleava's show at quarterback for the Vols. He accounted for four touchdowns in his first start as a freshman last season in the Cheez-It Citrus Bowl victory over Iowa and earned MVP honors. Iamaleava served as Joe Milton III's backup during the 2023 season, and it was only a matter of time before his strong arm, quick release and presence in the pocket pushed him to QB1 for Tennessee. There's been a ton of hype surrounding Iamaleava ever since he stepped foot on campus. He gets his chance in 2024 to show that he's as advertised.
Going with Iamaleava is an easy call for ESPN. The former five-star recruit is the most hyped player in East Tennessee since Peyton Manning left New Orleans for Rocky Top 30 years ago.
Iamaleava, however, isn't the only potential breakout star on the Vols' roster.
Running back Dylan Sampson along with wide receivers Dont'e Thornton, Chris Brazzell, Mike Matthews, and Braylon Staley are among Tennessee's potential breakout stars for the 2024 season. Tight end Ethan Davis is also a player that could become a household name this fall.
The Vols have plenty of exciting young talent. And if that talent plays to its potential in 2024, it could lead to another memorable season for Tennessee football.
