Kansas City Chiefs offensive lineman Trey Smith, a former Tennessee Vols standout, is currently focused on winning his third straight Super Bowl.
The Chiefs will look to become the first NFL team to three-peat when they take on the Philadelphia Eagles in Super Bowl LIX on February 9.
Once the Super Bowl is over, Smith, win or lose, will turn his attention to free agency.
The former Tennessee offensive lineman is expected to become the highest paid guard in the NFL.
Smith is rated by ESPN as the No. 2 free agent this offseason (behind Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver Tee Higgins).
ESPN NFL insider Jeremy Fowler noted on Wednesday that the Chicago Bears are a team that folks inside the league believe could be a threat to sign Smith.
From ESPN: Some inside the league are watching Chicago here. General manager Ryan Poles, who needs to drastically improve his interior offensive line for new coach Ben Johnson, was in Kansas City when the Chiefs drafted Smith. Several teams have him as the top overall free agent.
Landing in Chicago would reunite Smith with his former Volunteers teammate, offensive tackle Darnell Wright.
Smith and Wright played together for two seasons at Tennessee (2019 and 2020).
Wright was a first round selection by the Bears in the 2023 NFL Draft (No. 10 overall).
The Bears don't appear to be anywhere close to competing for a championship, but Smith, who could have three Super Bowl rings by the time he reaches free agency, deserves a big pay day as much as anyone in the NFL (Smith has been woefully underpaid in the NFL since entering the league in 2021 due to falling in the draft over). If Smith has to go to Chicago to get that pay day, then so be it — but he's earned the right to cash in on his elite talent.
Landing a big contract in Chicago after winning three Super Bowl rings with the Chiefs would be an excellent outcome for the former Vol.
