If Ohio State loses to the Tennessee Vols on Saturday night in the first round of the College Football Playoff, there will be plenty of OSU fans calling for Buckeyes head coach Ryan Day to be fired.
The main source of frustration with Day, who is 66-10 as the head coach at Ohio State, is the Buckeyes' current four game losing streak to Michigan.
Ohio State's loss to a mediocre Michigan team to end the regular season has some fans (and media) feeling like Day has to lead the Buckeyes to a national championship to regain the trust of OSU fans.
ESPN's Rece Davis, however, doesn't understand the frustration with Ryan Day. And he had a warning for Ohio State fans calling for Day's dismissal during an appearance on The Dan Patrick Show on Friday.
Davis suggested that Ohio State fans who want Day fired should "be careful what they wish for".
"I mean, I understand rivalry. I understand the importance of it," said Davis. "It's kind of ridiculous. I mean, really this loss to Michigan is the only one that was a bad one. It's not your birthright to beat Michigan every year.
"And you know, this was a bad loss. There's no way around it. They played tight, they played poorly, and they should have won the game. The previous three, Michigan had better teams than they did. They're the winningest program in the history of the sport and this small faction, I think generally, of Ohio State fans that act as if it's their birthright, that they're entitled to beat Michigan every year, is preposterous. The guy is 66 and 10, you know? I think this is his fourth playoff appearance. It's really preposterous. The guy's a good football coach. And you know, you got to be careful what you wish for. If they're trying to push him out, they better be careful what they wish for."
I gotta side with Davis on this one. Day's had more success over the last few years than almost any other college football coach in the country (outside of a couple of big names, such as Kirby Smart).
If the Buckeyes fire Day, where do they turn? There are no "for sure" answers in this sport. You don't know really know if a coach can do the job until they're actually doing the job. That's when you know if a guy has what it takes (all of the hot takes from analysts about a hire being a "home run hire" mean absolutely nothing).
Day's teams have lost some games that they should've won, but that's true of every program in the sport. No one is winning 100 percent of their games.
Maybe Ohio State fires Day and finds the next Kirby Smart. That's certainly possible, albeit unlikely. The more likely scenario is that Ohio State hires a coach that fares worse than Day. That's the risk of a move like this, which is why Davis is warning Buckeyes fans that they better be careful what they wish for.
Unfortunately for Day, the noise around his job status is unlikely to be quieted even if the Buckeyes beat the Vols in Columbus on Saturday night. If Ohio State advances to the quarterfinals, the same conversation about Day's job status will continue ahead of a Rose Bowl showdown with Oregon.
