Florida Gators head coach Billy Napier got his first taste of the Tennessee Vols' high-powered up-tempo offense last season during his team's visit to Neyland Stadium.

The Gators fared somewhat well against the Vols' offense in 2022 (better than most SEC programs), holding Tennessee to 38 points in their loss to UT.

Despite last year's experience against Josh Heupel and the Vols, Napier knows that this year will be its own unique challenge.

On Monday, while meeting with reporters, Napier was asked how Florida is preparing for Tennessee's tempo during practice.

Napier acknowledged that it can be tough to prepare for, but he noted that it's something Florida started working on before this week.

"That’s part of teaching and coaching, is how do we recreate the game for the players," explained Napier. "There’s a skill to that. We don’t just show up this week and think about that. We’ve been working on how we’re going to do that. I would tell you, coaches, we all bounce back and forth ideas in terms of how we do that. How we practice, some of those strategic ways to recreate the game when you play these different teams."

"The game continues to evolve," added Napier. "You see people go to the other end of the spectrum, get in the huddle every play. That’s one thing that’s unique about the SEC is the diversity in scheme, not only on offense. You get extremes on both ends, but you also defensively the number of variables you get in terms of front pressure coverage. You got to have systems on offense and defense that are rules based, that have the ability to adapt."

"You’ve got to play different ways each week to find ways to win. I think that’s one of the reasons why we’re built the way we are, is so that we can handle those variables.”

Tennessee's offense hasn't really "clicked" yet this season like it did last year. But the Vols are more than capable of finding their rhythm at any time. Maybe this week against Florida will be when it happens for this year's Tennessee team.

Either way, Florida can be certain that the Vols will be going fast early and often in an effort to take the crowd out of the game while also tiring the Gators' defense. If UT's offense clicks early against Florida, it could be a fun night in the Swamp for the Vols. But if they can't find their rhythm, it could be a long plane ride back to Knoxville.
