The Tennessee Vols are reportedly “trending” to land one of their top defensive transfer portal targets.

According to On3’s Pete Nakos, the Volunteers are the program that’s trending to land Penn State Nittany Lions transfer EDGE Chaz Coleman.

“Tennessee is now trending to land the Penn State transfer, sources tell On3,” wrote Nakos on Saturday.

South Carolina, LSU, and Ohio State are also in the mix for Coleman, though the belief is that the Buckeyes are “fading” for the talented EDGE.

“[Tennessee’s] had Chaz Coleman in as well,” said VolQuest’s Brent Hubbs on 104.5 The Zone’s Ramon and Will on Friday. “Tennessee is gonna go see that family at home and try to see if they can get that one closed. LSU is in there. South Carolina’s in there. Ohio State seems like they’re fading. The Ohio State people, they seem like they’re fading with Chaz Coleman.”

Coleman is a former four-star recruit who is viewed as a high upside player who can be an instant contributor for a playoff contender, despite his limited production as a true freshman in 2025 (nine tackles and one sack).

Chaz Coleman Update

Coleman has committed to Tennessee.

New Vols defensive coordinator Jim Knowles gave Chaz Coleman a great nickname at Penn State

One reason Tennessee is strongly in the mix for Coleman is that he played for new Vols defensive coordinator Jim Knowles at Penn State in 2025.

Knowles gave Coleman a tremendous nickname this past season at Penn State — the Chazmanian Devil.

“He’s crazy athletic, explosive,” said Knowles of Coleman in August. “For a freshman, he plays really hard. Like he plays to the echo of the whistle, chases the ball all over the place. I call him the Chazmanian Devil.”

Knowles continued to be impressed by Coleman after the start of the 2025 season.

“He’s jumped off the screen from the time I first got to be around him, and he’s made plays in games,” said Knowles in September. “He’s just a really disruptive guy. I think his progress is going to have to come against teams that are heavier in the run game and more talented in the run game. We’re going to have to see how he can hold up in that because I think he can pass rush against anybody. His development is going to have to come in against a team that really tries to run the ball.”

Coleman would fill a big EDGE need for the Vols if he lands with Tennessee.
