One of the Tennessee Vols' SEC East rivals made a big move on Friday.
According to a report from ESPN's Chris Mortensen, the Kentucky Wildcats are bringing Liam Coen back to Lexington to serve as UK's offensive coordinator.
Coen was Kentucky's offensive coordinator in 2021 before leaving to accept a job as the Los Angeles Rams' offensive coordinator under Sean McVay.
The Wildcats had the No. 36 scoring offense in the nation in 2021 (32.3 points per game).
This past season, with Rich Scangarello serving as Kentucky's offensive coordinator, the Wildcats had the No. 106 scoring offense in the nation (22.1 points per game).
Scangarello, whose offense was run-heavy with a lot of screen passes, was fired immediately after the 2022 regular season concluded.
Bringing Coen back is a big move for the Wildcats.
Kentucky's offense should be much better in 2022 — even with quarterback Will Levis heading to the NFL — with Coen calling plays for Stoops.
However, while it's a positive for UK that Coen is returning to Lexington, I wouldn't be surprised if this is a one-and-done deal. If Coen is able to get Kentucky's offense back to where it was in 2021, he'll likely get some head coaching offers after next season.
