There's a talented player still hanging out in the NCAA transfer portal that the Tennessee Vols should consider pursuing.
But not so he can help the Vols in 2024, but instead so he can help the program in 2025.
Texas A&M Aggies offensive lineman Bryce Foster is a former four-star recruit who spent the first three years of his career with the Aggies before entering the transfer portal this offseason.
Foster, who has two years of eligibility remaining, has battled some injuries during his career, but he also has significant SEC experience at center — a position where the Vols don't have an obvious answer for the 2025 season (Foster had over 20 starts at center for the Aggies).
Cooper Mays will be the Vols' starting center in 2024. It'll be Mays' fourth straight season as Tennessee's starting center. For now, the Vols aren't sure who their center will be in 2025.
Bringing in Foster to learn the offense in 2024 while sitting out a year would give Tennessee a talented option with SEC experience to potentially take over at center in 2025.
Now, the only way this works is if Foster sits out the 2024 season. That's because Foster entered the transfer portal during the spring window, which means he's not eligible to play for another SEC team this fall.
Players don't tend to take a path that requires you to sit out a year anymore, but it could be a smart option in Foster's case. It would allow him to make sure he's completely healthy, while building some chemistry with the players at Tennessee before potentially playing a key role for the team in 2025 (and then hopefully getting drafted).
Foster is still looking for a home after sitting in the portal for a month. He could either continue to hold out for immediate playing time in 2024 at a non-SEC program (or maybe even a non-Power-Four program). Or he could play the long game and sit out the season, learn Tennessee's offense, and then take over for Mays in 2025.
It seems like an easy decision. And it would be the wise decision if Foster still has his eyes on reaching the NFL.
