A former five-star Tennessee Vols recruiting target was reportedly arrested early Tuesday morning. 

The Athletic's Mitch Sherman reported on Tuesday morning that Nebraska tight end Arik Gilbert was arrested shortly before 2 AM after he was stopped by officers while carrying a bag with over $1,500 worth of vape products, cigars, and lighters. 

Gilbert transferred to Nebraska earlier this offseason after spending the last two seasons with the Georgia Bulldogs. 

The former five-star recruit caught two passes for 16 yards and a touchdown last season for the Bulldogs (he didn't record any stats in 2021). 

Gilbert originally signed with LSU out of high school and he enjoyed a productive true freshman season in Baton Rouge. 

The Georgia native caught 35 passes for 368 yards and two touchdowns for the Tigers in 2020 before heading to Athens. 

Tennessee was in the mix to land Gilbert during the recruiting process. At one point, it felt like the Vols had a legit shot after landing Gilbert's high school teammates, quarterback Harrison Bailey and wide receiver Ramel Keyton. 

(Bailey is currently at Louisville after a stint at UNLV while Keyton is expected to be a key player for the Vols this fall.)

Gilbert is a freak athlete who was rated as the No. 5 overall recruit in the 2020 recruiting class, but unfortunately he's never been able to put it all together and reach his full potential.
