Tennessee Vols fans are well-versed in the foolishness of Arkansas State Red Wolves head coach Butch Jones.
Jones, who was the head coach at Tennessee from 2013 to 2017, is probably more well-known for his bizarre sayings — five-star hearts and champions of life, among other nonsense — than his coaching accomplishments.
That’s why Vols fans won’t be surprised to learn that Jones still has his fastball when it comes to saying dumb stuff.
Former Tennessee head coach Butch Jones looks like a fool after major SEC upset
Earlier this month, Jones and Arkansas State played the Arkansas Razorbacks.
Before that game, which Arkansas won by 42 points, Jones told reporters that “some people” believe Arkansas is the most improved team in the SEC. He also said that Arkansas will challenge to win the SEC.
“It’s like I told our team, welcome to the SEC and high-level football,” said Jones before his team faced Arkansas. “You have a top-notch SEC program that some people think are the most improved SEC program in there. I have a lot of respect for the SEC.
“One of the most improved teams in the SEC,” continued Jones while discussing Arkansas. “They’re going to probably challenge to win it. They have a talented quarterback. Their payroll is probably about $17 million more than ours.”
On Saturday, the Razorbacks were upset by the Memphis Tigers, falling 32-31 in a game that Arkansas led by 18 points in the first half.
Arkansas is now 0-2 since beating Jones and the Red Wolves. The Razorbacks lost to Ole Miss last weekend, and they almost certainly won’t challenge to win the SEC.
Another week, another Jones take that aged horribly. Some things never change.
