A lot of Tennessee Vol fans tend to lose sight of former players once they transfer out of Knoxville. That’s an understandable position, as they’re no longer a Vol and out of sight, out of mind.

However, sometimes a move can bring a smile to your face even when a player is no longer on your team, and that could have been the case for a number of Vol fans watching the Miami Hurricanes vs. Florida Gators matchup on primetime Saturday night.

Former Vols safety Jakobe Thomas had a sack and a huge tackle for loss for the Hurricanes against the Gators

Thomas, who played for Tennessee in 2024 after transferring in from Middle Tennessee State University, transferred out of Knoxville right at the end of the spring portal window, picking the Miami Hurricanes. Opportunity was there for Thomas, as the Hurricanes had one of the worst secondaries among Power Four teams in 2024.

That choice has turned out well for him and the Hurricanes, who look like a completely different unit in 2025 with Thomas playing a role in that turnaround. And in Miami’s 26-7 win over Florida, Thomas again had some big plays, which helped kill two Florida drives.

The first was a sack of Florida quarterback DJ Lagway on a blitz late in the second quarter with the Hurricanes up 10-0.

But Thomas had another big play in a critical moment for Miami in the fourth quarter. With 12 minutes left and Florida in a good spot facing a 3rd and 1, Thomas busted through the line on a blitz and dropped Gators RB Jadan Baugh for a loss, forcing a punt. The play was huge, as Florida punted and Miami followed with an 13-play, 80-yard touchdown drive to clinch the win.

Thomas leaving Tennessee was a tough hit for Tennessee. The Vols surely could have used him on the back end of their defense in 2025, but it’s a move that’s apparently been a good one for him personally.

But there’s no doubt that his move helped deliver a moment on Saturday night that many Vol fans likely appreciated.
