Will Brooks is someone who will never have to buy a meal or drink in Knoxville ever again after the 2024 season. The former Tennessee Vols safety delivered a number of impact plays that helped lead a Tennessee defense that all but carried the team to its first ever College Football Playoff appearance last season.

Now, the former walk on is getting an opportunity in the NFL. Per FOX Sports’ Greg Auman, Brooks is signing with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Monday.

Brooks is a familiar face for the team, as he went through their rookie minicamp back during the summer.

That being said, the opportunity for making the roster, particularly coming in at the back end of camp, are very slim. The Bucs are dealing with multiple injuries at the safety position and need some help, at least temporarily, at the position going into the final week of the preseason. It is a chance, however, for him to showcase his abilities in a limited chance for the Bucs, either for an eventual practice squad spot or for an opportunity with another team.

Brooks became a fan favorite in 2024 with a number of crucial splash plays in notable wins. He had a pick-six against North Carolina State in the second week of the season. He had another long return against Kentucky. He notched one of the few positive moments in the playoff game against Ohio State with an interception.

But it was his game-sealing interception in the Third Saturday in October that put him in the hearts of Vol fans forever.

The Bucs’ preseason wraps up on Saturday night in Tampa against the Buffalo Bills. We’ll see if Brooks can notch some playing time and take advantage of whatever chance he gets from the Bucs this week.
